What is the 5S methodology?

Also called Housekeeping (from the English “tidying the house”), this methodology of Japanese origin consists of the application of five standards that aim to optimize the organization and quality of the workplace, namely:

  • SEIRI: sense of use — one should get rid of unnecessary items;
  • SEITON: sense of organization — organizing everything permanently;
  • SEISO: sense of cleanliness — cleaning and keeping the place clean;
  • SEIKETSU: sense of patterning — using patterns to increase order;
  • SHITSUKE: sense of discipline — maintaining order in the long term.

5S was created in Japan after World War II, a period in which companies sought to optimize the quality of their goods/services to compete in international markets, especially in the United States and Europe.

What are the benefits of 5S in the company?

Implementing and maintaining 5S in an organization offers several benefits. The main and most obvious is improved organization, allowing employees to perform their duties more effectively.

Quality optimization is another factor that must be considered. 5S allows for the reduction of material scrap (waste) and greater alignment throughout the iron and steel shop's product/service production process.

Finally, it's important to consider how to make the most of your time. Clutter can waste a lot of time searching for misplaced supplies. With 5S, you can achieve better results in less time.

How to apply 5S in the organization?

Some steps must be considered when applying 5S in the iron and steel store, the main ones being:

1. Create an implementation committee

Create a group responsible for implementation; it should be composed of the store's own employees. The goal of this committee will be to implement each of the 5Ss, starting with SIRI—that is, discarding or donating what is no longer useful. The group should be given time, autonomy, and space to meet.

2. Evaluate critical points with the committee

Meet with the implementation team to determine what needs the most attention; this will vary greatly from store to store. It's common for SHITSUKE (a sense of discipline) to be the most difficult aspect to implement; after all, it requires training and raising awareness among all employees.

3. Put all your senses into practice

This is the time to get your hands dirty. This involves taking the 5S project off the drawing board and, literally, organize the entire workspaceYou have to throw away what you no longer need, clean, find new organization patterns, and so on. It's hard work, but the results are satisfying.

4. Establish another committee for review

Finally, another team should be established (to avoid conflicts of interest with the first) to analyze whether the desired results were achieved. This process aims to identify what has changed, what still needs to change, and generate new habits among employees, fostering self-discipline.

Now it's easier to understand what the 5S methodology is, isn't it? As you can see, it's a truly important and easy-to-apply tool that can benefit an organization in many ways. But remember: you should always count on the collaboration of your team. internal public to put this strategy into practice and achieve the expected results.
