SINOBRAS Florestal invests in partnerships for genetic improvement of eucalyptus production

SINOBRAS Florestal investe em parcerias para melhoramento genético da produção do eucalipto

The company is responsible for supplying the bioenergetic reducer used in SINOBRAS' steel production.

Plant genetic improvement and silvicultural management are extremely important for the quality of plantations and, consequently, for the activities that depend on them, such as steel production. These are some of the research projects developed on SINOBRAS Florestal farms in partnership with renowned institutions such as EMBRAPII (Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation) and ArborGen Tecnologia Florestal.

SINOBRAS Florestal is the Grupo Aço Cearense company responsible for supplying the bioenergy reducer used in the steel production of Siderúrgica Norte Brasil SA – SINOBRAS. This research can contribute to important studies for reforestation and the production of the bioenergy reducer. For Juliane Ellem Costa, manager of SINOBRAS Florestal, the projects are important not only for the institutions involved, but for society as a whole. "These partnerships stem from the recognition of opportunities to explore synergies between technological research institutions and industrial companies to strengthen Brazil's innovation capacity," she states.

EMBRAPII's mission is to support technological research institutions in selected areas of expertise, enabling them to implement innovation development projects in cooperation with companies in the industrial sector. ArboGen, meanwhile, is a global leader in the development of forest seedling production, with over 50 years of experience in tree genetic improvement.

The goal of the partnership with ArboGen is to select genetic materials from the company's portfolio that are proven to be adapted to the region where SINOBRAS Florestal farms are located. The research aims to ensure greater productivity of forest plantations, providing excellent growth and yield to meet growing demand.

With EMBRAPII, the partnership focuses on developing superior genetic materials from Corymbia (eucalyptus). "As benefits, we hope to identify genetic materials with the desired characteristics for reducer production and that best adapt to the region's climate and soil conditions," explains Juliane Ellem Costa.

The research has been conducted on SINOBRAS Florestal farms for two years and should yield final results in another three years. Many other projects are expected to emerge from partnerships like these. "The search for process improvements and innovation is ongoing at SINOBRAS Florestal. In the future, we will publish new projects and results from monitoring those already under development, thus achieving positive results for the companies involved and the entire region. In this process, everyone wins," emphasizes Juliane.
