Perspectives and Opportunities for Civil Construction in the Economic Recovery

Perspectivas e Oportunidades para a Construção Civil na Retomada Econômica

THE Civil Construction is one of the driving forces of the country's economy. In addition to impacting other sectors of the economy, it employs millions of people, generating income and development across a comprehensive chain, from the production of basic inputs to the real estate, insurance, decoration sectors…

In 2020, Civil Construction was the sector that generated the most jobs in Brazil: 138,409 formal positions, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.

With the economic recovery after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector has been recovering since May 2020, compared to the height of the crisis, and as of August of that same year it has already begun to show positive results.

According to the Construction Industry Survey, carried out by Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry (CBIC), the Construction Business Confidence Index reached 58.9 points in November 2020, a figure higher than the indicator's historical average (53.6 points).

The report also states that business owners in the sector have positive expectations for the first half of 2021, predicting an increase in activity levels and a greater volume of new ventures and services being launched. The results of this Survey signal an increase in the purchase of inputs and the creation of new jobs in the sector.

“For 2021, the outlook indicates an expansion of 3.5% for the Brazilian economy, while Construction could register an increase of 4% in its GDP. If confirmed, this will be the largest growth in the sector since 2013 (4.5%),” according to Survey. One risk observed in achieving this performance is the possibility of shortages and increased material costs.
